《Time fold》 by Mikiko Kamada

I had the honor of co-creating the work time fold, which was presented in the exhibition “Circle to Circle” by artist, Ph.D. (Agricultural Sciences), and Plant Director MIKIKO KAMADA.

The exhibition featured flower compost—one of MIKIKO KAMADA’s signature works—as well as glass sculptures and videos that evoked the exhibition’s theme of the cycle of life and spirals.

During the exhibition, Mikiko approached me with the idea of incorporating our connection to this gallery into a work centered on the theme of “cyclicality.” As a result, Mikiko took charge of the creative direction and concept development, Amsterdam-based artist twofold handled the lacquer work, and I, Matsuda, was responsible for the chair’s design and production.

《time fold》 is a chair—an art piece—created by layering leftover plywood from the gallery’s construction and reclaimed gymnasium flooring, then finished with a lacquer coating. Plywood is a material that was originally used as medical casts during wartime but was later discovered by Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames as a material for mass-produced furniture. To serve as a counterpart to this plywood, which carries such a history, the artist selected “reyo”—gymnasium flooring salvaged from within Yokohama—and coated it with lacquer to preserve the story inherent in the material.

This work depicts how these two distinct materials—plywood, which has a long history but no specific story of its own, and gymnasium flooring, which holds the story of having supported the footsteps of countless children—are connected within the object of a chair.
